Business Studies is a relatively new course and was only introduced at Yewlands in 2014. The subject allows students to gain an insight into the world of business and look at many topics affecting modern society and the economy.
KS4 Business Studies
Students in Business Studies will follow the Edexcell Pearson GCSE syllabus. This course is split into 3 units of study.
Unit 1 – Introduction to small business (exam 25% multiple choice)
During this unit students will gain a basic understanding of a number of key topics and concepts including different forms of business ownership, industrial sectors, stakeholders, costs, break even analysis, sources of finance and financial accounts produced by businesses. Students will also look into factors such as exchange rates and taxes and how these affect small businesses.
Unit 2 – Introduction to small business (controlled assessment 25%)
The unit consists of 6 hours of research and then 3 hours of write up time under controlled conditions. Students will select 1 of 5 exam board questions to investigate and will select a small business to base their research on. They will then carry out independent research into the business and use this to try to answer the question thoroughly.
Unit 3 – Introduction to small business (exam 50% short & long answer questions)
This unit develops students understanding of a number of topics covered already as part of the first unit. Students will therefore revisit areas such as market research, business finance, customer care and staff recruitment. As well as this students will examine other areas including communication within businesses, competition, organisational structures and also methods of production.
This is a linear specification and assessments must be taken at the end of the course. 75% external assessment through two written papers, and an internal controlled assessment component of 25%.
