Business Studies

Curriculum Overview

Business Studies is a relatively new course and was only introduced at Yewlands in 2014. The subject allows students to gain an insight into the world of business and look at many topics affecting modern society and the economy.

KS4 Business Studies

Students in Business Studies will follow the Edexcell Pearson GCSE syllabus. This course is split into 2 units of study.

Theme 1 – Investigating small business (exam 50% - multiple choice, short & long answer questions)

During this unit students will gain a basic understanding of a number of key topics and concepts including different forms of business ownership, industrial sectors, stakeholders, costs, break even analysis, sources of finance and financial accounts produced by businesses. Students will also look into factors such as exchange rates and interest rates and how these affect small businesses.

Theme 2 – Building a Business (exam 50% - multiple choice, short & long answer questions)

This unit develops students understanding of a number of topics covered already as part of the first unit. Students will therefore revisit areas such as market research, business finance, customer care and staff recruitment. As well as this, students will examine other areas including communication within businesses, competition, pressure groups, organisational structures and also methods of production.

This is a linear specification and assessments must be taken at the end of the course. 100% external assessment through two written papers.
