Physical Education

Curriculum Overview

Physical Education at Yewlands reflects and reinforces whole school aims. High expectations, tailored learning pathways and student voice form the basis of the departments primary aim; to encourage active healthy lifestyles through participation and understanding.

We aim to deliver a motivational curriculum that considers individual students needs and preferences. Following a pathway of activities that students enjoy promotes overall achievement. High expectations throughout the department encourage and reinforce the school value of resilience. Students are challenged to push themselves and achieve their best whilst showing awareness and consideration for the varying needs of their peers- work hard, be nice!

Key Stage 3

Students in Y7 initially follow short blocks of a broad range of activities as a baseline assessment. Following this students enter a pathway based on their strengths and activity preferences:

Games Pathway – pupils following this route will enjoy a full range of team and individual games based on a common theme of outwitting opponents. Popular games include football, rugby, table tennis, cricket, basketball, badminton and tennis.

Aesthetics Pathway – pupils following an aesthetics pathway will enjoy performing activities such as dance, gymnastics and trampolining. Pupils will be encouraged to create and perform their own sequences and routines.

Mixed Pathway – pupils following this pathway will enjoy a mix of games and aesthetic activities.

All pathways will cover blocks of health related fitness and athletics.
Leadership and independent styles of working are encouraged throughout all pathways. Pupils will be assessed on their practical performances but also their ability to analyse their own work and the work of others using up to date learning technologies such as iPads.

Key Stage 4

Within key stage 4 students select a pathway based around an Academy. Academies are designed to meet the changing needs of students at this stage of their personal development. Focus is on performance as well as wider key skills that are desirable to future employers or further educational institutions. Within each academy pupils are encouraged to complete an accredited option that will gain some certification. These include Sports Leadership, Dance Leadership, Fitness Instructing and First Aid.

Blocks of ‘Leisure Options’ aim to encourage independence and place an healthy level of responsibility on pupils by allowing them the opportunity to go offsite and use local sports facilities during their PE time. Popular choices have included ice skating, swimming, golf, fitness gyms and rollerblading.

PE Kit

We have very high expectations within the department regarding PE kit and follow a 100% kit no excusal philisophy. When students are practically unable to take part in lessons there is still the expectation to bring kit and progress in the lesson in other ways such as coaching or officiating. All students are required to wear the kit which was chosen by our student council and consists of a blue Yewlands PE t-shirt, black shorts and black socks. Also available is an optional tracksuit and a sweatshirt. We firmly believe that a smart, consistent appearance results in a good team spirit and a professional approach to learning.

Out of school hours learning

Open participation clubs include football, netball, rugby league, basketball, trampolining, dance, gymnastics, cheerleading, badminton, table tennis, cricket, rounders, athletics and fitness. These take place during lunch times and after school and all are welcome to attend.

Inter-school competitions are our representative squads. Pupils are selected to represent the school and compete against other schools around Sheffield and South Yorkshire in a variety of sports.

Popular sporting and PE related trips have included football tours to Spain and Outdoor Adventure residentials at Edale, in the Peak District. This year we are also looking forward to our first trip to the Lake District and participation in the Lakeside Challenge.
