SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Learning), PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education), British Values, Prevent and CSE (Child Sexual Exploitation).

Extensive effort has been made to ensure the broad and balanced curriculum at Yewlands Academy, in addition to an extensive range of extra-curricular activities, promote the engagement of students in learning that give rise to opportunities for social, moral, spiritual and cultural enhancement. Furthermore, the creation of a personal development (PD) curriculum programme tailored to each year group allows specific, relevant and meaningful personal, social and health education to be delivered alongside relationship education for each student. The evolving school ethos, concentrating on our core values for students and staff at the Academy (determined in conjunction with the student leadership team – Make Your Mark) is becoming increasingly high profile across school and promotes many of the values upheld by British citizens within it.

An extensive cross curricular audit of SMSC, PSHE and British Values learning strands is being conducted at the start of the Autumn term and mapped out using the Academy’s Gridmaker software package. This can be made available to view by contacting Christopher Hunt, Assistant Headteacher or Gemma Hirst, Head of Y11 and Coordinator of PSHE at the following addresses: or A map spanning the academic year for the delivery of PSHE and further learning opportunities involving SMSC and British Values during Personal Development (PD) time can again be accessed by contacting the staff named above.

Senior Leaders within school have attended Prevent training (Governmental Counter Terrorism Initiative). The Principal and an Assistant Headteacher are Home Office approved Prevent facilitators to deliver subsequent training the staff body at the Academy. Whole school Prevent training was delivered to all staff (teaching and non-teaching) during September 2015. A Prevent action plan has been devised by Grant Bryce Stephen – Assistant Headteacher (Safegaurding). He can be contacted at

Safeguarding at the Academy continues to be a strength and there is a robust reporting and record keeping system at Yewlands specific to the safeguarding and protection of young people. There have been specific training events around CSE and Banardo’s have facilitated a ‘vulnerable students’ group within the Academy. Our safeguarding lead has an excellent working relationship with the ‘Taking Stock’ CSE Team and have supported operations across the local area. Again, please contact Grant Bryce Stephen if further details are required at
