Religious Education

Religious Education at Yewlands Academy is an important and successful subject. The department is coordinated by highly qualified specialists who are passionate about their subject.

The teaching style is active, with an emphasis on demonstrating the relevance of programmes of study to pupils' own lives. While RE is an academic discipline in its own right, much emphasis is also placed on pupils' personal development, helping them to understand the world they live in and their own place in that world. Lessons are equally accessible to pupils of any faith or none, and success in the subject is dependent on ability to understand, analyse, and evaluate, rather than on personal conviction.

Key Stage 3 RE
RE in Year 7 is taught as part of the Humanities Skills for Learning programme, where all students study units such as Castles, Chocolate, Romans, Africa, Pirates and Celebrations. RE, along with History and Geography underpin this. In Year 8, students are taught RE as an individual subject and study units such as: Ultimate Questions, Science and Religion, Control, Religion and Film, Ancient Religions such as Greek and Roman as well as specific units on Christianity, Islam and Sikhism. In Year 9, students study Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism, as well as units about contemporary modern issues, the Holocaust and taking responsibility for others.

Key Stage 4 RE
RE at KS4 is run as optional after school classes. The students follow the Edexcel GCSE in Religious Studies. This comprises of two units: Religion and life based on a study of Christianity and at least one other religion and Religion and society based on a study of Christianity and at least one other religion. Religion and life focuses on belief in God, matters of life and death, marriage and the family and religion and community cohesion. Religion and society allows the students to focus upon rights and responsibilities, environmental and medical issues, peace and conflict and crime and punishment. The two units together allow the students to achieve a full GCSE.

It is the Department's aim to increase the students' opportunities to experience religion outside of the classroom, locally, nationally and internationally.
