29th March 2018

Today students in Year 10 completed Paper 1 of their English Literature Mock exam, with Paper 2 to be completed on Monday 16 April 2018. In preparation for this second paper, a revision session is being held during the Easter holidays on Thursday 12 April 2018 from 9.30 – 11.30 am. Please encourage your child to attend.

To encourage students in Year 11 to work hard and do their best, a reward scheme has been introduced. The focus for this half term has been revision superstars and nominated students were invited to claim their reward this afternoon. The focus for next half term will be 100% attendance between Monday 16 April and Friday 18 May 2018. Students who accomplish this will be invited to a free breakfast event where they will be entered into a draw to win Meadowhall vouchers.

Mrs Hirst, Head of Year 11 will be running stress workshop drop-ins on Monday 16, 23 and 30 April 2018 at 3.15 pm to provide techniques to help students become more stress-resilient during the exam season. If you have a child in Year 11 and think these sessions would be beneficial, please encourage them to attend.

Easter activities have already started, with a display of decorated Easter eggs in the Academy’s foyer by Year 7 students. Three winners were selected from the entries. Well done to Alice, Olivia and Shayne.

During the Easter break revision sessions have been organised for students in Years 10 and 11. Your child has been issued a copy of this schedule. In addition, a small number of students will be enjoying activities in the park at Elsecar and some key stage 3 pupils will be supporting Year 6 sporting and craft activities at the Fox Hill Forum.

Congratulations to the Year 7 football team who beat Hinde House 5-2 earlier this week and also a big ‘well done’ to all the students in Year 7 who took part in the Sport Relief mile. Please follow us on Twitter @YewlandsAcademy where a photo of the event has been posted.

We have had 5 reported cases of head lice in Year 7 this week. A text has been sent to parents and carers in this year group to ask that you check your child’s hair and treat if necessary.

Our students are doing a fantastic job at looking smart every day and meeting our high expectations with regards to their presentation around the Academy and in our community. This establishes a sense of belonging and pride and helps us to develop the professional ethos we feel allows our students to achieve their best and prepare for adult life. I would like to thank you for your continued support in helping us to achieve this.

There is a very small minority however who do not consistently meet our expectations, particularly with footwear. Students are asked to wear black, business style shoes. Regular checks are made and any students not wearing appropriate school dress will be given the option to change into correct uniform/footwear by borrowing from existing school stock; we hope that students will accept this kind gesture to avoid any further consequences. Please visit our website at www.yewlandsacademy.org and click the parents’ tab and go to uniform and personal property to view details on uniform expectations.

Individual options meetings have now been arranged for Friday 27 or Monday 30 April 2018 for the majority of parents and carers and you should shortly be receiving a letter of confirmation. If you haven’t yet arranged an appointment, please contact Mrs Greenhall as soon as possible.

A parental meeting has been arranged for Wednesday 18 April 2018 at 5.30 pm to discuss final arrangements for Disneyland Paris. We will need to take copies of passports and European health cards, so please bring these with you on the evening. If you have a child who is attending this trip, but you are unable to attend the meeting please contact Miss Wragg to arrange an alternative time.

Finally, I wish you all a very happy Easter. I hope that you will have an opportunity to spend time with your families. Students return to school on Monday 16 April 2018 for 8.25 am.

Thank you for your continued support of the Academy.

Yours faithfully

Simon Winslow
