5 STAR ATTENDANCE

The Academy has introduced a new initiative called 5 Star Attendance to encourage all students to maintain 95% attendance or above and this has been communicated to students. In addition, Form Tutors are regularly monitoring individual pupils and your support will be much appreciated, particularly as poor attendance affects progress and limits opportunities.

Poor attendance results in:

• an equivalent of two missed years of school life for a child who is absent for a day of school per week
• 90% of young people with absence rates below 85% fail to achieve five or more good grades at GCSE and around one third achieve no GCSEs at all
• poor examination results limit young people’s options and poor attendance suggests to colleges and employers that these students are unreliable.

For those students who are already achieving 100% attendance, the Academy celebrates this achievement in year group assemblies and every half term recognises 5 star attenders. Please help us increase this recognition!

SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD

On Friday 19 October 2018, the Academy will be supporting the Wear Red Day which is a national day to encourage schools, businesses and individuals to wear red and donate £1.00 to facilitate the delivery of anti-racism education to young people and adults throughout Great Britain.

Students who wish to participate do not have to wear their uniform on this day, but must wear something red instead. Please note that no crop tops or midriff t-shirts will be allowed.

PARKING

Local residents are sometimes unable to access their driveways at the beginning and end of the school day as they are blocked by inconsiderate parking. Please be mindful of this when parking close to the Academy and note that the Local Authority Parking Enforcement Service are providing a monitoring visit during this month.

In addition, Sheffield City Council are running a campaign to encourage parents and carers to turn off their engines when waiting for their children. Fixed penalty notices will be issued for idling engines on the roads surrounding schools. The Academy will be informed before any action is enforced. For more information about the effects of idling engines visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/anti-idling

YEAR 11s

Thank you to invited parents and carers of Year 11 students who attended a 1:1 progress meeting with a member of the Senior Leadership Team this week. Further cohorts within Year 11 will be invited into school for a similar event in the future.
Mock exams will be running for this year group next week and I wish everyone the very best.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The football season has commenced and all teams have been involved in fixtures. Our Year 7s have set the bar high, beating Hinde House 10-1. ‘Players of the Match’ were Josh, Tom, and Alfie who scored a hat trick. Congratulations to everyone who took part.

Finally, may I remind all parents of Year 7s that the Settling-in Evening is taking place next Thursday, 11 October at 3.30 pm – 6.30 pm.

Yours faithfully

Andrew Kelly

Acting Principal
