Year 10 English Literature Exam

Year 10 English Literature Exam - Early Entry Decision

On behalf of all Yewlands staff, I would like to wish you a very happy New Year.

As you will understand and appreciate, we continually strive to achieve the very best outcomes for our learners. The Year 10 curriculum is continually under review, to ensure that our provision is of the highest quality and enables us to meet the needs of our learners.

As you may be aware, Y10 students across the country have been given the opportunity to sit some of their GCSE exams early. Yewlands has been no exception to adopting this approach. However, we have recently been reviewing this practice in relation to English Literature, in light of information from both the Department for Education and Ofqual.

Nationally we have now had two cycles of the reformed English Literature 9-1 GCSE exam and analysis of this national data shows that results for 15 year-olds are lower than for 16 year-olds, by about 10 percentage points at each of grades 7 and 4 in 2018.

In light of this new information, the Brigantia Learning Trust has taken the decision, across all of its secondary schools, to delay entries for GCSE English Literature until the end of Year 11. This will ensure that all students are as fully prepared as possible for this exam.

If you have any queries regarding this decision, there will be two parental drop-in sessions on Monday 14 and Thursday 17 January 4.30pm - 6.30pm. During these drop-ins members of the Academy’s Leadership team will be available for one to one conversations with parents/carers. If you are unable to attend either of these sessions but would like more information, please contact the Academy.

Yours faithfully

Andrew Kelly
