Yew Futures Careers Programme

Y11 Post-16 Evening - Thursday 22nd November 2018 – 3.30-6.30pm

Y10 Work Experience - Monday 8th July - Friday, 19th July 2019

Our aim is to inspire young people to develop their skills young people to develop their skills, talents and character through a wide range of activities, to use their curiosity and creativity to find new ways of achieving their potential and to have the confidence, drive and resilience to follow their dreams.

The Careers Programme at Yewlands Academy is firmly embedded into the Tutorial Programme and our Enrichment Days.

Year 7 and 8

  • Let’s Talk about Jobs
  • Introduction to Local Employment Opportunities
  • I-Could Website Quiz and Job Studies
  • Introduction to Employability Skills

Year 9

  • Preparation for Option Choices :-
  • 1:1 meeting with Senior Leadership Team – all students meet with a member of Senior Leadership Team to decide appropriate GCSE options
  • Options taster sessions (Enrichment Day 3)
  • Opportunities to attend Careers & Higher Education Fairs
  • Introduction to Sheffield Labour Market Information
  • ‘I-Could’ careers exploration software

Year 10

  • World of Work skills - Interview techniques, CV writing
  • Employability skills
  • Visit to Longley 6th Form
  • Guest speakers – a variety of careers talks including medicine, sports and politics throughout the year
  • 1:1 careers meeting with careers advisor
  • Work Experience

Year 11 Post 16 preparation

  • UCAS Progress – application support
  • Writing a Personal Statement support
  • Careers & Higher Education Fairs
  • Post 16 Market Place
  • Guest speakers – a variety of careers talks including medicine, sports and politics throughout the year
  • 1:1 careers meeting with careers advisor
  • Apprenticeship Fair
  • Apprentice 1-1 Support Sessions
  • College/6th Form Visits
  • HeppSY Mobile Classroom
  • NCS Challenge – all Year 11 are given the opportunity to take part in this initiative to develop skills for employment

We also have a dedicated Careers Advisor from Sheffield Futures who works closely with senior staff responsible for Careers Education and post-16 progression into further education, training or employment. Students are offered 1-1 support from the Careers Advisor from Y9 onwards.

Students and parents/carers are given a range of opportunities to attend relevant Post-16 evenings, visits and interviews so they are ready to make the next important step when they leave school.
