Careers - Parent Carer Information

At Yewlands Academy we offer a comprehensive programme of Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) to support all pupils in making informed choices about their future. We also recognise that parents and carers are the primary and trusted source of careers advice for young people. With future opportunities and pathways changing all the time.  We aim to provide you with up-to-date information, resources and guidance to you to have well-informed, meaningful careers conversations at home.

Unifrog

Yewlands Academy uses the Unifrog Careers Learning Platform to support pupils to explore their interests, reflect on their careers learning, discover future opportunities and access high quality labour market information.

All pupils can log in with using their school IT account and the Microsoft Single Sign-on process to access a range of resources.  As a parent or carer of a pupil at Yewlands Academy you can also set up an account on the platform.  You will be able to access all the same resources as your child along with up-to-date labour market information.  By setting up an account you will also be updated on any careers activity that your child participates in at school

Year 9 Options Process

The Year 9 options process is an important milestone in a pupil’s education, as it is the first opportunity for them to make choices about the subjects, they will study in Key Stage 4. During this process, pupils are supported through assemblies, lessons and guidance activities to help them understand the subjects available, how different options link to future pathways, and the importance of keeping choices broad where possible to increase future opportunities.

Year 10 Work Experience

Work experience is a short-term opportunity for pupils to gain first-hand experience of the workplace, helping them to develop employability skills and understand professional expectations in a real working environment, with support from an employer or mentor. Year 10 pupils are offered the opportunity to take part in a self-sourced work experience placement, which usually takes place during the penultimate week of the summer term (please check with your child’s Head of Year to confirm exact dates).

The school is not able to find placements on behalf of pupils, and responsibility for securing a placement rests with the pupil and their family. We strongly encourage pupils to begin searching for a placement as early as possible. Any pupil who is unable to secure a placement will take part in alternative, structured careers activities in school, designed to develop employability skills and provide meaningful insight into the world of work.

Year 11 – Post 16 Applications and Transition Support

The transition from Year 11 to post-16 education or training is an important step, and by law all young people must remain in education or training until the age of 18. All Year 11 pupils are supported through this process, with applications made via Sheffield Progress the online portal for post-16 education, training and apprenticeship support in Sheffield. Pupils will receive login details and guidance during the first half term of Year 11 and are encouraged to attend open events and apply to at least two post-16 providers. Ongoing support is provided by Heads of Year, form tutors and the Careers Team.
