The History Department at Yewlands Academy encourages students to study the past to help them understand the world in which they are growing up. Students analyse many of the big historical events that have shaped the history of Sheffield, Britain, and the World.
Students also study a wide variety of evidence to enable them to critically evaluate different interpretations of the past. They are encouraged to become independent thinkers with strong research skills and the confidence to challenge their first impressions.
Key Stage 3 History
At KS3 all students are encouraged to create the foundation of knowledge and understanding which will help them to value their role as citizens in a democracy and be able to respond well to the challenge of GCSE History. Students also have the opportunity to visit sites of historical interest.
KS3 History covers a range of topics with a focus on British history between 1066 and 1900, and twentieth century history across the globe.
The History Department places great importance on continuous evaluation of its approach to teaching and learning.
Student progress is accelerated inside and outside the classroom by using a variety of teaching and learning styles, including group work, extended research assignments, class discussions, independent study and creative activities.

History is a very popular option choice at Yewlands. It is highly respected by employers, as it is a subject which demonstrates an ability to analyse complex topics and write high quality pieces of structured writing.
The department follows the EDUQAS GCSE History course. The course units are:
British Study in Depth - 1B. the Elizabethan Age, 1558 - 1603
Non-British Study in Depth - 1G. Germany in Transition, 1919-1939
Period study - 2A. The Development of the USA, 1929-2000
Thematic study - 2F. Changes in Health and Medicine in Britain, c.500 to the present day
This is a linear specification and assessments must be taken at the end of the course. Each paper is worth 50% of the marks. The papers are divided on the basis of content. There is no tiered paper.
