Curriculum Overview
The History Department at Yewlands Academy encourages students to study the past to help them understand the world in which they are growing up. Students analyse many of the big historical events that have shaped the history of Sheffield, Britain and the World.
Students also study a wide variety of evidence to enable them to critically evaluate different interpretations of the past. They are encouraged to become independent thinkers with strong research skills and the confidence to challenge their first impressions.
Key Stage 3 History
At KS3 all students are encouraged to create the foundation of knowledge and understanding which will help them to value their role as citizens in a democracy and be able to respond well to the challenge of GCSE History. Students also have the opportunity to visit sites of historical interest to further expand their cultural horizons and foster a greater appreciation for the history around them.
Key Stage 4 History
The GCSE curriculum at Yewlands Academy consists of four topics:
- Weimar & Nazi Germany: 1918-1939
- Early Elizabethan England: 1558-1588
- Superpower Relations & the Cold War: 1941-1991
- Medicine through Time: c.1250-Present
Within each of these topics, students will analyse historical material and interpretations, develop critical thinking skills and create their own judgements and insights about the past. This ability to rationalise and explain is a “golden thread” through all levels of historical study at Yewlands, and helps to prepare pupils for life as curious and critical participants in society.
GCSE History can lead to further study of the subject at both A-Level and University, as well as granting opportunities in fields such as law, journalism, and education.
Yewlands Academy uses the Edexcel exam board for History qualifications: further information and curriculum specifications can be found at: Edexcel GCSE History
