YEAR 11 REVISION
Throughout next week we will be supporting our Year 11 students with a 'Revision Focus Week’. Students will be given numerous resources, presentations and learning sessions on different ways to revise, including a pack which contains their personal revision timetable that they have written with the support of their tutor and a number of resources they have collected from subjects throughout the week.
To further support this, we will be hosting a parental support evening on Wednesday 9 January 2019 from 5.30 pm - 6.30 pm. The aim of this evening is to give you vital information on supporting your child throughout the exam period, including coping with exam pressures and how to support their revision. Refreshments will be provided.
CHRISTMAS CARD WINNER
This year the Academy ran a Principal’s Christmas card competition. Entries were of a very high standard and it was a difficult decision to pick the overall winner, however, Alicia’s (Year 8) design of Rudolph has been selected as my Christmas card for 2018. Earlier in the week, all entrants were invited to a celebratory reception with myself and Alicia was presented with a gift.
CHRISTMAS LUNCH
On Tuesday 18 December 2018 the Academy will be serving Christmas Lunch. The cost of the meal will be the normal price of £1.80 and will include turkey with all the trimmings or a vegetarian option. Students can also choose a pudding as well at a total cost of £2.10. For students who prefer a lighter option, turkey and stuffing baguettes will be available at a cost of £1.80.
CHRISTMAS HAMPERS
Tutor groups are starting to put together food hampers to be delivered to the elderly in the local community. Students are asked to bring in non-perishable goods such as tinned food, biscuits, cereals etc. This is an annual event that has been running for over 20 years and provides an opportunity for our students to give something back to the community. We will be delivering the hampers on Tuesday 18 December 2018. If you know of any elderly member of the community who would be deserving of a hamper, please forward their details to Miss Bissett at nbissett@yewlandsacademy.org
CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY
On Thursday 20 December, the last day of term, we will be having a Christmas Jumper Day in aid of Save the Children and Hallam FM’s Mission Christmas. Students do not have to wear their school uniform and instead will be allowed to wear a Christmas jumper or something along this theme for a £1.00 donation. Please note that no crop tops or mid-riff tee-shirts will be allowed. If you wish to donate direct to Hallam FM’s Mission Christmas the link is: https://www.cashforkidsgive.co.uk//campaign/school-challenge/fundraisers/yewlands-academy-/
LAST DAY ARRANGEMENTS
The Academy will close for Christmas on Thursday 20 December 2018 at 1.20 pm for all year groups. For those children entitled to a free school meal, lunch will be served at 1.20 pm and they will leave site by 1.40 pm. The Academy will re-open on Monday 7 January 2019 and students need to be on site for 8.25 am at the latest.
ADVERSE WEATHER
Hopefully, we will experience a mild winter this year, however, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the Academy’s adverse weather guidelines:
Should the Academy need to close this decision will only be made in exceptional circumstances and a message will be broadcast on BBC Radio Sheffield. Please listen to this station. The Local Authority have an alert system in place. If you wish to sign up to this service, please go to
https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/content/sheffield/home/schools-childcare/school-closures.html
A message will also be placed on our website and a text will be sent. If you have recently changed your mobile number and have not informed school, please email chockenhull@yewlandsacademy.org with your new contact details.
If there is no closure broadcast the Academy will remain open. Please do not telephone school unless you have extenuating circumstances.
If the Academy decides to close early due to weather conditions, please make contingency arrangements with your child. We will always endeavour to keep the school open.
Please note that during exceptional weather we will always try to be flexible with regards to school footwear. Students who do not come to school in the correct footwear are to bring their shoes in their bags to change.
Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Yours faithfully
Andrew Kelly - Principal
