Parental Letter 12th January 2021

As always, I hope this letter finds our families safe and well during this incredibly difficult time. I write to you in our second week of National Lockdown 3 with some Academy updates.

Remote learning

Please could parents/carers continue to encourage their child to complete their learning on Microsoft Teams every day; thank you for supporting this. Many students have been receiving achievement points from their teachers for fantastic work and moving forward we will now be celebrating this through a Star of the Week reward scheme. The feedback we have received on our remote learning offer has been extremely positive and I have appreciated those of you who have got in touch. Your feedback is incredibly important to us and helps us further improve the learning experience for our students. To support this a student survey has been sent to all children through Microsoft Teams and a parental survey will be sent this week; please let us know your views.

A polite reminder that lessons on Microsoft Teams become live at the start of each period: Period 1: 9.05am – 10.45am, Period 2: 11.00am – 12.40pm, Period 3: 1.10pm – 2.50pm. Your child’s form tutor will continue to ring your child every weekday morning at 8.40am on Microsoft Teams for a safe and well tutor period. Please ensure your child is ready to receive this call. Further guidance regarding accessing remote learning, including a video guide, is available on the Academy website at If you require any further support with your child accessing their Microsoft Teams or your child is unable to access an electronic device at home please contact

Mass testing

Myself and the Brigantia Learning Trust leadership team are finalising plans on how Yewlands can support the lateral flow devices provided by the government to implement mass testing within the Academy. During this time lateral flow tests will only be relevant to those staff and students currently within the Academy who choose to undertake this. More information on this will follow.

Year 11

At the time of writing secondary schools do not have the full information on how Year 11 grades will be produced other than the Education Secretary’s announcement last week that 2021 GCSE results will now be decided by teacher-assessed grades. Unfortunately, I do not have any other information on what this will look like. It is incredibly important that Year 11 students continue to take their studies seriously and work hard remotely. Your child’s teachers continue to assess work completed over this lockdown period as it could affect their overall GCSE grades. As with all students within the Academy, Year 11 have access to their teachers daily through Microsoft Teams and should contact them via this if they require any additional support. As more government guidance is released, I will update parents/carers.

The Academy calendar

Due to the current situation all Academy events have been put on hold; this includes upcoming parents’ evenings. I apologise for this inconvenience and ask for your understanding at this time.

Finally, I want to share my best wishes to you and your loved ones; I fully understand the anxieties that many parents/carers may have. Rest assured myself and the Yewlands’ staff will continue to do everything we can to support our young people and provide the best education possible. We are focussed on this every day and will not let our children down.

Take care.

Yours faithfully

Mr Andrew Kelly
Brigantia Learning Trust
